WHERE DID EVERYTHING COME FROM? (Genesis 1:1-2:3)

A long, long time ago, before there was a mommy or a daddy, a cat or a dog, God created the heaven and the earth. You cannot see God right now, but the Bible tells us that He is real. There are many things that God has done that mommy or daddy could never do. We call them miracles. And one of those miracles is how everything was created. No mommy or daddy could have done all that, but God did, and He did it in only one week.

On the first day when all that was in the world was darkness and a lot of water, God said, "Let there be light." And there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. This light and darkness helps us to know what time it is. While there is light, we do all our work and play. When it is getting dark, the day is coming to an end. "And God saw that it was good."

On the second day God said, "Let there be a firmament." We call this the sky. The firmament provides air and divides the waters into two places: the land and the sky. Now the water in the sky is where rain comes from, but at this time, it was used only for making dew. Dew is the water that is on the ground in the morning to water all the plants. "And God saw that it was good."

On the third day God said, "Let there be land and let it be separate from the waters." And God called the land earth and He called the waters seas. And God said, "Let the earth grow grass, herbs with seeds, and fruit trees with seeds." And that is what the earth did. And God saw that it was good.

On the fourth day, God said, "Let there be lights in the sky. The bright light that shines during the day is the sun, and a light that shines at night is called the moon. Also at night, there are stars." And God saw that it was good.

On the fifth day, God said, "Let there be fish and whales and other sea creatures in the water. Also, let there be birds in the air." And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply."

On the sixth day, God said, "Let there be cattle, creeping things, and other animals." And so God made the animals, cattle, and every thing that creeps. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image. And let them take care of the fish, birds, cattle, animals, and every creeping thing." So God created a man and a woman in the image of God. And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and take care of the land, fish, birds, animals, and every living thing. And God said, "I have given every herb with seed and every fruit tree for all to eat from." And God saw every thing that He had made, and it was very good.

And when all God's work of creating was done, on the seventh day God stopped his work, and He rested on the seventh day from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day, and made it a special day for a holy purpose because that in it He had rested from all his work, which God created and made.

APPLICATIONS FROM THE COVER STORY

The first two people on this planet were Adam and Eve. They were God's children. God provided for all their needs. He gave them the perfect place to live, good food, fresh air, sunshine, water, and rest. God also gave them something else. He gave them chores. They were to take care of the animals, plants, and each other.

Chores also provide exercise, which is important for good health and strength. Chores, when done completely and correctly, demonstrate responsibility, trustworthiness, and helpfulness. It also provides a sense of belonging; for all can share in the duties together, even though the specific tasks may be different and exclusive. All the tasks completed by a family make the whole house more enjoyable to live in and create a stronger family bond. It was once said that the family that prays together stays together. In addition, a family that works together supports staying together. A person that does not want to do their part actually strains the bond.

Now, if God saw the need in a perfect world to assign chores to the first two children on earth, then we ought not look upon chores as something to dread, but be enthusiastic and even willing to go beyond what has been asked of us. This brings blessings both to the person doing the chore and to all it affects. Take for instance if you were asked to pick up the things in the living room. If you are old enough to run the vacuum cleaner, you might consider doing that as well even though you were not asked to do it. It would make all in the house very happy.

Also consider how God created all things. He did it very orderly. If on the first day God created the animals, they would not have survived because there would not have been any food, air, or even a place to live. God made all things in order. He created light for nothing can grow without light, then the sky was created for air and for watering purposes, then the land and plants to sustain life, then the sun and moon with the stars to provide at the very least a scheduled resting period, then the sea creatures and eventually the animals that man and woman would be taking care of, and then man and woman were created to complete the creative works, and given a day of rest.

This reveals that we too should be orderly and not haphazard with whatever we do. We should plan ahead, schedule, and complete the things we do according to the plans.

Also, notice that everything that God did was very good. He did nothing halfway or incomplete. He did nothing that was imperfect. We too should do our best and do as perfect of a job as we have been enabled to do.
