Isaac Marries Rebekah (Genesis 23, 24)

When Sarah was a hundred and twenty seven years old, she died. Abraham mourned and wept and eventually buried her in the land of Canaan.

Now Abraham was old but the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. Abraham said to his top servant of his house that ruled over all that he had, “Say that you will not find a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, but that you will go to my country and to my family and find a wife for Isaac.” And the servant said, “What if the woman is not willing to follow me? Should I bring your son to the land where you came from?” And Abraham said, “Do not bring my son there. The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father's house, and from the land of my family, and which spoke to me, and that sware to me, said, ‘To your descendents will I give this land.’ He shall send his angel before thee, and you shall find a wife for my son from there.”

And the servant took ten camels and some men and departed for the city of Nahor. And when they were near the city, the servant made his camels kneel down by a well at evening and the time when the women go out to get water. And he said, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray to you, send me good speed this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. I stand here by the well of water; and the women of the city will come out to get water. Let it be that the woman to whom I shall say, ‘Let down your pitcher that I may drink’ say to me, ‘Drink and I will give your camels drink also’, let her be the wife for Isaac.” And in a short time Rebekah came out of the city with her pitcher upon her shoulder. And she was very fair to look at and was never married. She went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came back up. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Let me drink a little water from your pitcher. And she said, “Drink.” And then she said, “I will get water for your camels also, until they are done drinking.” And she quickly emptied her pitcher into a trough and ran again unto the well to get more water for all of the camels. Now the servant told Rebekah why he came and how she was chosen. Then she ran to tell these things to her family.

And Rebekah had a brother named Laban. He ran out to the man at the well. And he said, “Come in, for I have prepared the house and room for the camels.” Then Abraham’s servant said, “I will not eat until I have told about my errand.” And Laban said, “Speak.” And the servant told the whole story and then said, “If you will be kind and true to my master Abraham, tell me what you will do.” Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing you said comes from God. Rebekah is yours. Take her and go. Let her be Isaac’s wife, as God said.”

And the servant of Abraham and his men ate and drank and stayed all night. Then they rose up in the morning and the servant said, “Send me away to my master Abraham.” And Rebekah’s brother and her mother said, “Let Rebekah stay at least ten days and after that she shall go.” And the servant said, “Please do not slow me down seeing this is of the Lord. Let me go to my master Abraham with Rebekah.” And they said, “We will ask Rebekah.” And they called Rebekah and said, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” And they sent away Rebekah, her nurse, Abraham's servant, and the servant’s men. And they blessed Rebekah and said, “You are our sister; be the mother of thousands of millions.” And Rebekah arose, her nurse, and they rode upon the camels following the servant.

And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at evening and lifted up his eyes. He saw the camels were coming. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she jumped off the camel because she said to the servant, “Who is walking in the field to meet us?” And the servant had said, “It is my master.” She took a veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all about the things that had happened. And Isaac brought Rebekah to his mother 's tent and took her as his wife. He loved her. And Isaac was finally comforted since his mother's death.

PARENTS: Young children love repetition and so they will love to hear this story over and over again. We did our best to include something for all ages so where necessary, please assist your child or adjust it to make it more their level.

And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. APPLICATIONS FROM THE COVER STORY

The Bible says that Abraham was old and that God blessed him. This reveals that there are rewards in serving the Lord. The reward however is not to be the motive. There are blessings in serving God rather than serving self. In the family, everyone should do as God would have them do and not think of themselves but rather each other. The result is a happy home. This again should not be the motive but rather simply the right thing to do.

When Abraham was choosy about a wife for his son reveals that Biblically parents should be involved in their child’s wedding plans. Though arranged marriages are unheard of in America for the most part, parents still should make sure the potential couple are right for each other.

When the servant prayed to God for guidance in choosing the wife, it revealed how much we all need to take our daily decisions to God in prayer. But the right kind of prayer is required; this includes discussing all the benefits for the kingdom of heaven in the decision to be made.

Rebekah’s kindness to the strangers and the strangers’ camels should be a habit to be practiced daily. Kind gestures without love motivating the act however is not kindness but rather the counterfeit - probably selfishness, such as “If I do a kind deed, maybe I’ll get something in return.”

When Abraham’s servant refused to eat until his mission was complete it showed that we should always look to the commission at hand first over the physical needs, just like Jesus said for us to “seek ye first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). And then our needs will be met.

And Isaac’s love for Rebekah shows the only way to have a happy marriage.
