God Saves Lot and His Two Daughters (Genesis 19)

And two angels went to Sodom in the evening. Lot sat at the gate and seeing the angels, rose up to meet them. He said, “Come to my house and stay the night and you can rise up early in the morning to continue your journey.” And they said, “No thank you. We will stay in the street all night.” But Lot continued to offer his house and they agreed. Lot made them a meal including unleavened bread.

But before they went to sleep, some men of the city surrounded the house and said, “Where are the men which came here tonight? Bring them out to us.” Now Lot went out to talk with them and locked the door behind him. Knowing that the men wanted to do mean things to the visitors, he offered his two daughters instead. But the men were angry and would have hurt Lot but the angels pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. And the angels caused the mean men to go blind so that they would stop pounding on the door.

And the angels asked Lot, “Do you have any other relatives here?” Tell your sons-in-law, sons, daughters, and everyone else to get out of this place because God is going to punish the city. And Lot went out to speak to his sons-in-law, which married his daughters, and said, “Up, get out of this place because the LORD will destroy this city.” But they did not listen.

And when the morning came, the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Get up. Take your wife and two daughters, which are here.” But Lot was not moving quickly so the men grabbed his hand, the hand of his wife, and the hand of his two daughters. And when they got out of the city, the angels said to not look behind and to not stay in the flat land. Go to the mountains. Lot said, “I don’t want to. I am glad you had mercy upon me and saved me, but if I go to the mountains, something bad may happen. Can’t I go to the little city near by called Zoar?” And the angels said, “OK, but hurry.” And as Lot entered into Zoar, the sun began to rise.

Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire. And the cities were destroyed.

But Lot’s wife looked back and at that moment became a pillar of salt.

And Abraham woke up early in the morning to go to the place where he prayed to God each morning and looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain. He saw the smoke of the country went up as the smoke coming out of a furnace.

Then Lot left Zoar and lived in the mountain with his two daughters for he feared to live in Zoar. There in the mountains Lot and his two daughters lived in a cave.

PARENTS: Young children love repetition and so they will love to hear this story over and over again. We did our best to include something for all ages so where necessary, please assist your child or adjust it to make it more their level.

APPLICATIONS FROM THE COVER STORY

When Lot invited the angels, which he thought were just two men, back to his house to eat and stay the night, Lot was showing kindness or hospitality.

The men who wanted to harm the angels shows us what people can become if they let all their “I wants” control them.

Lot’s family not listening to the message of needing to leave the city is much like today. Many people do not believe Jesus is coming back real soon and that they need to be ready for Him. Instead, people are too busy wanting to do other things and have little time for God. This is why it is important to spend time each day reading or listening to stories from the Bible. The Bible prepares people to meet Jesus.

The fact that Lot did not move quickly, causing the angels to grab them and pull them out of the city, teaches us that whenever something needs to be done, we ought to move quickly to do it.

When Lot did not want to go to the mountains, this not only showed disobedience but a made up fear. Jesus is with us wherever we go and there is nothing to fear, especially that which we do not know.

When Lot’s wife looked back, this again was an act of disobedience. The correction was more than a timeout, the rod, loss of an item, or any other method of correction. She became a pillar of salt. Sometimes there are serious things that your mom or dad tell you and if you do not do as they say, you can get seriously hurt. It is always best, even when you do not know why, to do as you are told.

When Lot left Zoar and lived in the mountain with his two daughters, Lot finally did the right thing, but it would have been better if he would have done so on the first command.

If you really love your parents, you will immediately do as they tell you and it might even keep you safe.
