The Day God Made Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:4-24)

When God was making everything, He spoke and it happened. This is one thing that makes Him God and why we are not. But the sixth day of creation was special for many reasons. One particular reason is that instead of speaking things into existence. God gathered “the dust” or loose dirt from “the ground” and “formed” a man out of it. Then “God breathed into his” nose “the breath of life” and that man “became a living soul.” This is how Adam began his life. He had no earthly mommy or daddy. But rather, he had a heavenly Father who created him.

Now God made all things perfectly, but one thing that He made extra special was a garden that was located in the “eastward” part “in Eden.” In the garden of Eden, the man found work to do. He was to take care of the garden by “dressing and keeping it”. But there was something else in the garden and the man was not allowed to eat from it. It was a tree called “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”. God told the man, “thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” This would serve as a test to the whole universe - will this man, Adam, obey God, demonstrating his loyalty and trust? Time would tell.

Another thing that Adam was to do was to name all of the animals that God “formed” “out of the ground.” So as the animals came to Adam, he would give them a name. But there was one thing that was obviously different between him and the animals is that each of them were created in pairs - a male and a female. A Mr. Elephant had a Mrs. Elephant, but Adam had no one. No one until it was time.

God knew that Adam needed a companion, but not just any companion. Dogs are considered companions but though they look like they understand, in reality, they do not. Adam needed someone he could talk to and get answers. Sure Adam could talk to God, but Adam needed someone on his level. You see, the animals are below Adam because they really cannot think for themselves. God was above Adam for God was his Creator. And God knew that Adam needed a companion on his level. God was getting ready to create a “help meet” for Adam but only at the right time. A helpmeet is someone that is helpful and that can assist. When you put away your things, you are being a helpmeet. When you set the table, you are being a helpmeet. There are a lot of things that you can do to be a helpmeet. Just ask your mommy or daddy what you can do to be a helpmeet.

Now God decided on a special someone and a special way to provide that someone for Adam. “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This [is] now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” This woman Adam then named Eve.

APPLICATIONS FROM THE COVER STORY

But instead of speaking the animals, Adam, and Eve into existence, God took the time to form them by His hands showing that He is a God that is personal, detailed oriented, careful, patient, caring, and many other qualities that we as Christians should have cultivated in our own lives.

In the garden of Eden, the man found work to do. He was to take care of the garden by “dressing and keeping it”. This reveals that God believes in chores. We are not to have idle time, which was the root cause of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. They had too much time on their hands. What would society be like if instead of having hours of “free time” and there would be more chore time? Well, disobedience would decrease, and health would increase because good chores involve exercise, obesity would be non-existent because of the exercise, and overall, there would be a better society.

Now God told the man, “thou shalt not eat of the tree of good and evil: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” This reveals loyalty and trust? Every parent’s command is to be followed unless it contradicts the Bible and even then, respect is still to be demonstrated.

In naming the animals, Adam demonstrates order of which each of us should cultivate.

And the fact that God created a helpmeet reveals that we are to be helpful one to another. Find out how you can be helpful to all you come in contact with.
