NEW TESTAMENT LESSON

Jesus Is Tempted By Satan (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13)

After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. After Jesus had fasted, which is to eat nothing, for forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry. Satan, the tempter, came to Jesus and said, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones become bread.” But Jesus answered the devil and said, “It is written in the scriptures (Bible), ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds (or comes) from the mouth of God.’”

The devil then tried to use the Bible to get Jesus to do something wrong by quoting only a little bit making it sound like it supports the devil’s request. To do this, the devil took Jesus up into the holy city, Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle or a high point of the temple and said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down because it is written in the scriptures, ‘God shall give His angels charge (or protection) over you, and in the angels’ hands they shall bear (or lift) you up so that you do not dash (or hurt) your foot on a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “It is written in the scriptures also that ‘You shall not tempt (or test) the Lord your God.’”

Again, the devil took Jesus up to a very high mountain, and showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and the glory of them. The devil said to Jesus, “All these things will I give to you if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to the devil, “Get away from me Satan because it is written in the scriptures, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’”

And when the devil had ended all of his temptations, he departed from Jesus for a little while. Angels then came to Jesus and took care of Him. Afterwards, Jesus then left the desert to begin His public ministry.

PARENTS: Young children love repetition and so they will love to hear this story over and over again. We did our best to include something for all ages so where necessary, please assist your child or adjust it to make it more their level.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON

Joseph In Potiphar’s House (Genesis 39)

And Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar was an officer of Pharaoh. He was the captain of the guard and an Egyptian. Potiphar bought Joseph from the Ishmeelites as a slave. Now the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous (blessed) man. Joseph was in the house of his master and his master saw that the Lord was with him. He notice that the Lord made all that he did to prosper (go well) in his hand. Joseph found grace or special privileges in Potiphar’s sight. Joseph soon became the person to be responsible for everything that happens in the house. After becoming the overseer of the house, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field. Potiphar trusted Joseph so much that Potiphar did not know how much he had except for the bread, which he ate. And Joseph was a goodly person and well favored.

Later in time Potiphar’s wife was thinking and saying things towards Joseph that made her unfaithful to her husband. But Joseph refused and said to his master's wife, “Your husband has given me charge of everything in the house. There is no one greater in this house than I. Because he is so trusting in me, and you are his wife, how can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”

Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day by day, begging Joseph to do what was wrong. One day Potiphar’s wife had a plan. Joseph went in the house to do his business but none of the men of the house were there. Then Potiphar’s wife caught Joseph by his garment pleading for Joseph to do the wrong thing. Joseph immediately ran but his garment was left in her hand.

Now when Potiphar’s wife saw that Joseph had left his garment in her hand, she called the men of her house, and spoke to them telling them lies. She said that Joseph did do the wrong thing towards her and that it was all his fault. And she said that when she cried out loud for help Joseph ran and left his garment. She then kept the garment until Potiphar returned. And when Potiphar did return, she told the same lie to him.

When Potiphar heard the words of his wife, his wrath (anger) began to show. Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, which was a place where the king's prisoners were kept. So Joseph was there in the prison. But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy. Joseph was well liked by the keeper or guard of the prison. The keeper of the prison gave to Joseph’s guidance all the prisoners that were in the prison. And whatsoever they did there, Joseph was the doer of it. The keeper also trusted Joseph completely because the Lord was with him. And everything that Joseph did, the Lord made it to prosper.

CHARACTER LESSON

The devil tempting Jesus to do wrong is not very nice. If Jesus did do the wrong, or if anyone does wrong, then they are choosing to not be in heaven for eternity. So it is very serious. And this is why we should not tempt anyone to do wrong. It is not a matter of just seeing if they will do it, but it is a matter of tempting someone to give up heaven.

Jesus saying “It is written” each time the temptations came tells us how we can overcome temptation. We need to become familiar with the Bible as well, so we can know what is right and what is wrong.

The devil using the Bible and telling only the part of the verse that looks like Jesus should do what the devil told him to do reveals how others can use the Bible to prove wrong things are supported by the Bible when they are not. Therefore, we need to know many verses in the Bible and to understand better what God would have us do and not do.

The Bible teaching that we should not tempt the Lord is a good practice. We should not do something wrong to see if we will get caught or corrected. We should always want to lovingly obey God.

The angels helping Jesus after the devil left was very kind. We also should help others who are hungry, tired, and hurting.

Joseph was careful and responsible for all that his boss gave him to do. When mommy or daddy give you something to do, it should be done carefully that nothing breaks or anyone gets hurt and it should be done responsibly, right away and correctly.

Joseph not doing what Potiphar’s wife wanted him to do and even said, “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” should be the attitude for everything that is wrong.

Joseph running away from Potiphar’s wife is an example for when others try to get you do something wrong.

Potiphar’s wife then told lies that got Joseph in trouble when he did not do anything wrong. You should never tell lies because it may get others in trouble and God says not to do that. If you love God, you will also treat others with the truth.

Joseph went to prison without complaining of fussing even though he did nothing wrong. Sometimes you may not do anything wrong and receive a correction. Think about Joseph when this happens.

Joseph was very polite and responsible in a terrible place called prison. You should also be polite and responsible wherever you are even if you do not like the place you are at or the people you are with.

NEW TESTAMENT MEMORY TEXT: Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

OLD TESTAMENT MEMORY TEXT: Genesis 39:9 How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

NATURE LESSON

And the earth brought forth... the tree yielding fruit, whose seed [was] in itself, after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good. (Genesis 1:12)

Snakes are very quiet and cunning so as to catch their prey (another creature to eat). Potiphar’s wife thought she had a prey. She thought she could be cunning and get Joseph to do something wrong called sin. She thought that her beauty would get Joseph to give in. Then she begged him to do the wrong thing. Finally, she sent everyone away so she could be alone with Joseph. Each cunning act, Joseph was able to escape. But finally, she told lies. Just like the first serpent. “Now the serpent was more subtle (cunning) than any beast of the field” (Genesis 3:1). This serpent was used to get Eve to eating something that God said not to eat. Joseph ended up going to prison because of the lies, but the lies were not completely believable. If they were, Joseph would have been killed instead of sent to prison. Potiphar’s wife was cunning like a serpent.

Now God compares children that have no discipline and parents who will not train children properly, to serpents. “The wicked are enemies of God as soon as they are born. They go astray as soon as they be born and speak lies. Their poison, words that can hurt and cause problems, is like the poison of a serpent. They are like the deaf adder that stops her ear and will not listen to the voice of charmers, charming ever so wisely.” God says that children will be like the serpents that cannot be trained. They are not listening. This is why it is important to listen to your parents.

Snakes have a tongue that slithers in and out to help them sense the environment. They are able to tell what is going on around them. They will extend the tongue as far as possible making it appear very sharp. Poisonous snakes have poison, called venom, inside their mouth. When they bite, the venom is then injected into what they bit. Some people, God says, are like these characteristics (Psalms 140:1-3). They speak very sharp or hurtful words. The words can even act like a poison by causing other people to not like someone else. This is why it is always a good rule to be forever looking for the good in others, and to say good things about other people.

There are things that people drink that God says has the same affect as a snake, in that it stings and has poisons and therefore they should not be drinking. “Who have big problems? Who are always sad? Who are difficult to be with? Who are unable to speak clearly? Who fight? Who have redness in the eyes? They that drink a lot of wine and use mixed wine. Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its color in the cup, when it moves itself aright. In the end it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder” (Proverbs 23:29-32).

HEALTH LESSON

Whether Therefore Ye Eat, Or Drink, Or Whatsoever Ye Do, Do All To The Glory Of God (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Exercise:

“And the LORD God took the man [Adam], and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15).

As part of God’s Health Plan, people are to be active. Physical activity is necessary to maintain all our body parts and to have our bodies ready to handle emergency situations.

Exercise not only gives a sense of feeling good, but it also helps in preventing diseases, recovering from a disease, and is also important to the digestion of food. For adults as well as for children, physical labor or exercise that brings a healthful weariness to the muscles will create an appetite for simple, wholesome foods. You will not want just sweet candies and chips but fruits and vegetables.

Symptoms of not getting enough exercise include obesity, unable to endure, general muscle weakness, a stomach that sticks out, regular low-back pain, muscle stiffness and soreness, low breathing capacity, unable to tolerate stress, high pulse rate while resting as well as high blood pressure, increased blood-fat levels, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Did you know that a twenty-minute brisk walk an hour after lunch can give you the energy and clear mind needed for the remaining day? Remember, aggressive exercise should always be at least one hour before bed time and at least one hour after meals. Do not study or do hard exercises immediately after a full meal. The nervous system is very hard at work and the brain is called into active duty to assist the stomach. If mind or body are taxed, the process of digestion is slowed.

Genesis 39:3-4 “And his master saw that the LORD [was] with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. 4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all [that] he had he put into his hand.”
