Noah (Genesis chapters 5 through 9)

Adam and Eve had many children, and they grew up and had children of their own. Then their children had children. And so on. For instance, Adam had a son named Seth who had a son named Enos who had a son Cainan who had a son Mahalaleel who had a son Jared who had a son Enoch who had a son Methuselah who had a son Lamech who had a son Noah.

Now not every child that was born obeyed God. There were a lot that did not. In fact, there were so many that did not obey God that God decided that it would be best to destroy the world. God wanted to end all the pain and problems that these mean people were causing, but God also wanted to give everybody a chance to change from being bad to being good. Now those that did not want to change, God would destroy with a flood. Those that would want to be good would be kept alive. And God would give them a long time to decide. He gave them one hundred and twenty years. You see, people lived a lot longer back then as compared to today. They did not have all the pollution, diseases, and they even ate healthier.

So how did God keep the good people alive? He asked Noah, who was a good person, to build a large boat called an ark. God told him that his family and anyone else that wanted to be on God’s side and not Satan’s side were to get into the ark when it was finished.

While Noah built the ark he told as many as possible about the flood to come and that they would be safe inside the ark, but only his wife, his three sons, and their wives went into the ark. Animals also were brought on board - two of every unclean animal and seven of the clean. Unclean animals are God’s garbage disposals and are usually full of poison. Now both types of animals went on board as male and females or two-by-two.

Then the door on the ark was shut, but nothing happened. Nothing happened until seven days later, and then all of a sudden - BOOM! CRACK! Thunder and lightning for the first time. And rain came down from the clouds for the first time. And water was gushing out of the earth. There was panic everywhere. Those inside the ark were safe while those outside were not. It rained forty days and forty nights to flood the whole earth.

But now the earth was full of water. With the sun shining day after day and a strong wind blowing, it took a while to dry up all that water. One hundred and fifty days was water covering the earth. Finally a mountaintop could be seen. Noah waited forty days and sent a dove out but it could find no rest and returned to the ark. After seven more days, the dove was sent out, and when it came back in the evening, it was carrying an olive leaf. This told Noah that he could leave the ark soon. In another seven days, the dove was sent out again, but this time it never came back. God then told Noah that he and his family and all the animals could leave the ark.

Now Noah thanked God right away for protecting him by taking one of every clean animal and offering it to God, and God was well pleased. He blessed Noah and his family. God then told Noah that he would never destroy the whole earth with another flood, and as a reminder of this promise, God placed a rainbow in the sky. And God said, “When I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud. And I will remember my covenant…”

PARENTS: Young children love repetition and so they will love to hear this story over and over again. We did our best to include something for all ages so where necessary, please assist your child or adjust it to make it more their level.

APPLICATIONS FROM THE COVER STORY

Since Jesus said that the days of Noah are going to be repeated before the second coming, it is important to realize that we do live in an unsafe world. Violence is reported frequently, people in general are thinking of how much fun they can have in this world even if it hurts others, and a relationship with God is not really thought of much. In the time of Noah, only eight got on board. In the last days, Jesus says only a few shall be saved. It is necessary to understand that the majority of the world is wrong including what the world reports. There is only one safety and that is to take the Bible as it reads, trusting in God every step of the way.

The fact that Noah and his family entered into the ark together and stayed in the ark is very similar to what the Bible says should happen as we get closer and closer to the second coming. People should be going to church more and more often and not less and less. Noah and his family did not stay in their houses but actually went to the ark. Neither should people stay home but should go to church regularly.

Just as godly people were taking ungodly spouses to marry in the days of Noah, today we need to be careful of who we call our best friends. Jesus wants us to be friends with everyone, but the closest friends should be those that believe like we believe. The reason is for encouragement to continue believing the same way. Having best friends that do not believe like we do allows them to put doubt in what we believe. Some people have actually stopped believing in God because of their friends. That is what happened in the days of Noah or there would have been more that got on the ark.

Now it was very important for Noah to do exactly what God told him to do, which is what all of us need to do. When mom and dad, teachers, and others in authority say to do something, and God approves of it, we ought to do it on the first command. If Noah did not build an ark, what would have happened to the world? If Noah did not build it exactly as God said and instead took short cuts because it was taking so long (one hundred and twenty years), how long would the ark have lasted on the waters? If Noah did not keep the animals on board as God told him to, what animals would be missing today? So we see how important it is to do exactly as we are told and not try to do it some other way, at some other time, or even not at all.

Noah and his family were in the ark for many, many, months. How boring! Whenever you are told to sit still and be quiet and it seems so boring, just think about not having to sit still for months and months and months.
