The Day Adam and Eve Sinned (Genesis 3:1-24)

Now in the garden was a serpent, which was more cunning then any other creature. Satan used this serpent to speak to Eve and asked, “Has God said, you shall not eat from every tree in the garden?” She replied, “We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden but not from the tree which [is] in the middle of the garden. God said, ‘You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, or you will die.’” And the serpent answered back, “You shall not really die because God knows that when you eat from that tree, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods knowing good and evil.” And when she saw that there was good food on the tree and pleasant to look at, as well as, wanting to be made wise, she took the fruit and ate it. Then she took some to Adam, her husband, and he ate it also. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they had no clothes on, so they sewed fig leaves together and wore aprons.

In a short time they heard God speaking as He was walking in the garden and Adam and Eve, his wife, hid among the trees in the garden.

And the LORD God called unto Adam, “Where are you?” And Adam said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.” And God said, “Who told you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to?” And Adam said, “The woman you made for me gave me the fruit and I ate it. And God said to Eve, “What have you done?” And Eve said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate it.”

And God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field. On your belly you will crawl, and dust will you eat all the days of your life. I will put hatred between you and the woman, and between your children and her children. One of her children will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.” And to Eve God said, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception. In sorrow you will have children and your desire will be to your husband, who will rule over you.” And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife, and have eaten from the tree, which I commanded you not to eat from, you will not eat of it and cursed is the ground for your sake. In sorrow will you eat from it all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles will grow, and you will eat herbs. With hard work will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it were you created, dust you are, and to dust you will return.”

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve because she was the mother of all living.

To Adam and Eve, God made coats of animal skins, and clothed them.

And God said, “Look! Adam and Eve are like us. They know good and evil. Now, if they take fruit from the tree of life and eat it, they will live forever. They will be a sinner that shall not die.” So God made Adam and Eve leave the garden of Eden, to go and till the ground for food. He also placed on the east side of the garden of Eden Cherubims and a flaming sword, which was used to protect the tree of life. Adam and Eve and all of their children were not permitted to go back into the garden.

And as they departed, they realized that all that they were given was lost over one disobedient act, revealing how serious sin really is.

PARENTS: Young children love repetition and so they will love to hear this story over and over again. We did our best to include something for all ages so where necessary, please assist your child or adjust it to make it more their level.

APPLICATIONS FROM THE COVER STORY

When the serpent spoke to Eve, which was something out of the ordinary, she should not have entertained the strange thing but should have found Adam. Likewise, a child should run to their parents when approached by a stranger or are unsure of the environment. Never should they wait to see what is going to happen next.

When quoting someone, it is important to quote without exaggeration. Eve added the extra words “neither shall ye touch it”, which allowed Satan to easily prove God in error by simply touching it himself. A child should learn to tell the truth at all times, and a parent should tell the truth all the time as well. Parents, are there some holidays that you have not been truthful about?

When Eve believed the serpent’s words that she would not die, she chose to trust a stranger over trusting her parent - God. A child should always be able to trust every word that comes from a parent’s mouth. Never should a child see hypocrisy in a parent and always should a child feel free to come to his parent, especially with questions.

When Eve wanted to know both good and evil, this reveals that God never intended for us to know both sides. If you want to bring up your child so that they will be in heaven, reveal to them only truth, good, and facts. As far as possible, never permit your child to see error, evil, and untruths. The theory that they would eventually see it anyways is of Satan. Each parent should do all they can to hold off the evil as long as possible.

When Eve saw that the food was good by using scientific observation, this tells us that man-made science is faulty. It does not reveal the truth about God. Parents need to realize that most scientific data especially reported in the news is nothing more than man’s opinions, faulty tests, or a hidden agenda. The only standard of belief is the Word. To know this is true wisdom.

When Eve saw that the food was desirable, this tells us that to live by whatever feels good, do it, have it, enjoy it, etc. is deadly. A Christian’s life is full of disappointments, tough decisions, unpleasant situations, etc. The more a Christian orders their life in accordance to the Bible and the less advancement or even reversal by friends and family will only cause unpleasant situations. So desire is never the criteria in decision-making. A “Thus Saith the Lord” should always be first and foremost. Although this may seem challenging, always keep in mind that Jesus loves us and is at our side experiencing the same.

When Adam blamed God and the woman for his sin and the woman blamed the serpent, this reveals that each of us is responsible for our own actions. Satan cannot force anyone to sin. We alone choose to disobey. So when a child says someone else made him do it, make sure they know that it is not possible.
